The Aftermath!

So this past weekend saw us play the first round matches of the Starcraft League. The event was held during the LAN party that took place at McVeigh’s over the weekend. It was a bit of a hustle getting Starcraft time in the middle of COD4 mayhem but we did manage to play our games.

The reception was fantastic and several players signed up as Starcraft games were starting!! Kudos to the first timers who tried (and loved) Starcraft.

The Matches
All the matches were played on Heart Break Ridge and were a best-of-three series of games.

mosh Vs mr_hyde – this one was a bit of a one-sided affair with mosh pretty much dominating the match up. Note that these two players met at the WCG Kenya preliminaries. The results were no different from what happened at the WCG, mosh ran away with a 2-0 win with the first game finished within four minutes thanks to a Zergling rush.

KArtel Vs JuGG3RNOt – both of these players are relatively very new to Starcraft, with KArtel’s first match ever beign the first one of these series. The games were slow and seemed clumsy but exciting to watch what new players do in Starcraft. JuGG3RNOt started out the stronger of the two and won the first game but KArtel came back strongly and beat JuGG3RNOt in the next two games thanks to a lot of coaching by Psyko Fero, the current Kenyan Starcraft champion. KArtel won 2-1.

Psyko Vs McVeigh – the big match! Both McVeigh and Psyko are experienced plays and they both play Protoss with a strikingly similar style of play. The games in this match were fast and furious and low-economy with both games played out with nothing but Zealots. The first game was quickly taken by Psyko after a rush that caught McVeigh unprepared. The second game, however, was a classic. Both players hit each other hard with Zealots, and eventually Dark Templar.

Psyko Vs McVeigh

Psyko brilliantly blocking his choke

McVeigh battled hard to bring the series to 1-1 but, alas, Psyko was brilliant on the day. He pulled of a stunning move that saw him block his choke (entry to his base) with two Dark Templar and denied McVeigh what was a sure win. The match ended 2-0 for Psyko. Kudos to the local Starcraft champion, Psyko.

Heart Break Ridge

Heart Break Ridge This is going to be the Starcraft map that will be used in at least the first round matches of the upcoming Starcraft tournament.

“Heartbreak Ridge was introduced in the fourth round of the 2008-09 ShinHan Bank Proleague season as one of four new maps for the round, and modified for the second round of the 2009-10 Shinhan Bank Proleague season. The third can be somewhat difficult to take as the walking distance is rather far, but the backdoor route into the third makes this a less drastic effect than it would otherwise be. Taking a fourth is a bigger problem, as the options for a fourth gas are directly above your opponent’s base, in the center, or along a direct line from your opponent’s natural. Map control is extremely important to securing resources on this map. Counters are relatively common, with a more mobile army counterattacking into the natural instead of directly engaging a less mobile army pushing along the other path.

Notable Features

  • Neutral Buildings – There are 7 stacked neutral temples blocking off the cliff overlooking each natural.
  • Blocking Minerals – Along with the neutral temples there is a stack of 20 minerals (worth 0) that can be mined out to allow access to the cliff overlooking your opponent’s natural or can be used to gain a back route into your own third expansion. It is important to mine these minerals out when you take your third so that your workers can flee into your main more safely. It is also important to keep an eye on them (often a pylon or supply depot on the “inside”) before you take your third to avoid surprise runbys.
  • Ridges – The many ridges in the middle of the map (giving the map its name) give the advantage to the defender and allow them to pull back several times to each ridge in a delaying action if necessary. This means that Terran pushes and contains in TvT and TvP and Zerg pushes and contains in ZvT can be hard to fight back, due to the power of siege tanks and lurkers on these high grounds.
  • High ground behind natural – There is a high ground behind the natural expansion. The main can also be shot from the high ground, so it’s something to keep in mind when creating buildings, especially when playing against Terran. This is also a common location for cannon rushes and ling runbys, though the latter requires mining out the minerals by the third.
  • Pylon on the ridge – Near both start locations there are thin ridges (to the left of 4, to the right of 10) on which there is a 2×2 flat surface that allows building a Pylon. The Pylon’s Psi-Matrix radius allows building a Gateway inside the main base, shortening the notice-time of the Proxy significantly. While the right side only allows for one Gateway to be built, the left allows for a maximum of three.”

Starcraft League Tournament – Finally!!

Exciting news people! Starting this weekend at McVeigh’s is an all new Starcraft tournament.

Why start this? Because I love Starcraft!! And I want to see more people play the ‘beautiful game’. There’s a decent amount of prize money to entice and excite you further. I hope to see lots of people sign up.

Let me get some stuff out of the way:

SO it won’t be a knockout type of tournament, rather it will be a league. Why? To give everyone a fighting chance. Currently the Starcraft skills amongst the people I know are not evenly distributed. A league gives one the realistic chance to challenge the more experienced players. Ama? Also, a league runs longer. 🙂

Prizes and stuff:
1st – Kshs 5,000/-
2nd – Kshs 1,000/-
3rd – A big huge hug from Psyko Fero

The first round of matches shall be played over this coming weekend at the upcoming LAN bash that will take place at McVeigh’s, Old Racecourse Estate, near Kariokor Market (in Nairobi). More information on this here.

The map that shall be used for ALL the first round one-on-one games is Heartbreak Ridge.

Prepare well. Good luck. Any questions? Comments? Andika hapa chini.

Starcraft at the iHub

Over the weekend I took part in the WCG Starcraft tournament for Kenya. I made it to the finals! 😀

In case you’re interested, here are the replays for the three games of the finals:

To view the replay, you must have Starcraft: Brood War installed and patched to the latest version. What do you think of the game?

Well, I lost in the finals. I’m not sure why. Psyko is a good player though and he played in a way that forced me to change my strategy a whole lot. Good for him. I need more ‘match’ practice. I cannot wait for the next time I play him.

Speaking of which, the WCG event was very well organised and I was impressed by the numbers of people who showed up. I’m sure that all gamers out there would agree that we need more events of that sort.

In particular, I’d like to see more Starcraft tournaments in this country. AND better players – honestly, apart from Psyko the other players need to pull up their socks. No offence intended.

Would a well organised Starcraft league with a decent amount of prize money (Kshs 10,000 or some PC hardware) work in Kenya?
